3D Design with Thinkercad
Designing for 3D printing sounds like a very complex project and can be pretty intimidating for those who are not comfortable with technology at first.
However, the programs available nowadays are very simple and offer many tutorials that make projects self-explanatory. Even people with very little training are able to come up with satisfactory outcomes. This assignment is an illustration that required me to create a wearable piece of jewelry with a spiritual animal designfor 3D printing as a representation of who I am as a teacher. Panicking with my lack of technology skills, I started to explore Thinkercad –a program for 3D printing my models—as soon as I could. To my surprise, even after a few tutorials and drafts, it took me a total of 4 hours to finalize and submit my final design, a butterfly with multiple rings. Once printed, we were encouraged to embellish the design with other mediums to create a piece that could match our character. With that, I manipulated my 3D plastic butterfly to develop a graceful, detailed, and refined necklace. By comfortably manipulating a variety of materials, the necklace aesthetically mirrors my fashion designer taste while displaying my artistic versatility to approach creativity. Additionally, I was also able to apply my art historian training by critically selecting an animal that metaphorically symbolizes my values as a teacher. Passionate about education, I strive to execute my function as a teacher with my heart and soul so I can be sensitive and flexible to address students’ strengths and weakness individually. Because butterflies are deep and powerful representations of life, many cultures associate the butterfly with our souls. Around the world, people view the butterfly as representing endurance, change, and hope –characteristics that I prize in my academics in seeking to establish myself as an outstanding teacher in the near future. Overall, I am thrilled to have an opportunity to represent many facets of who I am with a wearable spiritual animal. Proud of my final project, I am amazed how many tools technology can offer to create and produce art in a short amount of time. |

Further Consideration:
|
* What is the purpose of art pieces placed in museum or gallery in contrast to the ones exhibited in public spaces?
* Considering that street art is an expression that gives a voice to a marginalized population that usually does not attend galleries and museums, once it gets inside an institution, do you think it loses its principles and values? * How can street art hold a place in traditional art markets without corrupting its principles? |
